What is it about?

The article argues that Ukraine should be seen as a modern European state with a European future, rather than as a backward country in the post-Soviet space. After the war, Ukrainians can look to the future with hope as Ukraine transitions away from post-Soviet corruption and towards a democratic and open society.

Why is it important?

The article was written during an illegal invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory by Russian armed forces. The issues that the article raises are especially significant against the backdrop of the war. The article looks beyond the usual headlines and news bulletins and identifies the deeper issues at stake in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Perspectives

I write this article as a theologian from the United Kingdom with a longstanding connection with Ukraine. I support Ukraine in its struggle against the illegal and barbaric invasion and I hope the article makes a contribution towards helping people understand why it is important to continue supporting Ukrainians in their struggle for freedom, democracy and the open society.
