What is it about?

The ethical thought of Franz Magnis-Suseno, an Indonesian Jesuit Priest and philosopher, fosters interfaith dialogue and public reasoning of Islam and Christianity in the background of the rise of Islamic radicalism in Indonesian plural society. In the background of the Second Vatican theology of religions he criticizes the exclusivism of salvation that motivates the radical Islamic groups to join to intolerant and violent actions in the name of God.

Why is it important?

The case of Jakarta ex-governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama in 2017 was a sign of difficulty of the conservative Islam to make public reasoning in a pluralistic democracy. This article show how Franz Magnis-Suseno' dialogue ethics can encourage public reasoning between Islam and Christianity and moderate the inter-religious tensions in pluralistic democracy.

Perspectives

Writing this article is a very special opportunity for me to introduce the thought of an important Indonesian interfaith figure to the international readers. I hope that the article contributes critical insights for interfaith relations in pluralistic democracy which is post-9/11 always threatened by religious radicalism everywhere.
