This article engages debates in anti-colonial marxist aesthetics to understand why poets and writers in Pakistan developed new, avant garde forms to create work in opposition to General Zia ul Haq's 1979 military coup.

This article helps us better understand the possibilities of art in raising global awareness of and support for movements against an authoritarian state.

Perspectives

My hope is that this article will spark a conversation about how we can resist contemporary authoritarianism by learning more about past strategies that had global resonance.
