What is it about?

The aim of this research was to create a portrait of publishing trends from 2009-2019 depicting the prevalent authors (i.e., the Who?), the institutions from which published works are submitted (i.e., the Where?), and the salient themes of research showcased (i.e., the What?) in the peer-reviewed journal Society & Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies. In this paper we identify preeminent authors, SOAN authors with the highest number of citations, and most frequently cited authors across the SOAN publications. The most frequently cited SOAN articles and the most cited reference across the SOAN publications examined are equally identified. The organizations from which the most SOAN publications were generated are also explored and authorship and citation relationship are illustrated. Regarding the topics published by SOAN, themes were identified by keywords chosen by authors to describe their research, as well as a text analysis of titles and abstracts. Relationships between authors, organisations, countries, and research topics are illustrated and findings are discussed within the broader context of human-animal interaction research.
