What is it about?
Individuals affiliated with animal rescue organizations were compared to those not affiliated with regard to the likelihood of conviction and implementation of legal penalties in animal hoarding cases. The affiliated did not significantly differ from the non-affiliated with regard to the likelihood of conviction or legal penalties. A prior history of hoarding was associated with a higher likelihood of probation and a ban on future animal keeping upon conviction. The number of animals seized in a hoarding case was positively associated with a longer duration of a probationary sentence.
