What is it about?

This short note deals with the question whether rain was expected in the theatre of Dionysus in Athens during performances of ancient Greek drama. The evidence I bring for discussion here is an ancient 'scholion' (philological comment) on Aristophanes' Coulds (verse 267).

Why is it important?

The question whether rain was expected in the athenian theatre has not received so far much attention by scholars. However, the issue at stake is generally of paramount importance as far as the realia of dramatic performance are concerned. The evidence brought in the present paper contributes, thus, to our knowledge of the history of theatre in classical antiquity.

Perspectives

The present paper is a product of my recent research interest in the relationship between ancient Greek culture and the clima. I hope it encourages more scholars to address more topics associated with this broad field.
