What is it about?

We show how spontaneous transitions between memory states can be induced in an attractor neural network. The studied transition mechanisms can potentially be similar to the ones the brain exploits to search for similar memories to a presented one.

Why is it important?

This work shows that spontaneous transitions can take place in attractor networks. Transitions exploit similarities between memories as the brain is known to do. The work points to neural mechanisms that can be crucial for the brain to carry out important memory functions.
