Why is it important?
It's important to know that FDI alone is not sufficient for developing countries to build technological capabilities. FDI may not be accompanied by technology transfer. There is a need to promote R&D activities within the country by conscious policy making.
Perspectives
India has adopted a FDI induced growth regime. Nearly all sectors are wide open for foreign investors to invest. It is believed that FDI is a profound vehicle of technical, marketing and managerial know-how for developing countries. This article argues that local R&D capabilities need to be strengthened for FDI to play a role in building technological capabilities.
