Why is it important?

We have characterized a novel mouse model of preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension. Interestingly, these mice which are hypertensive because of increased levels of the renin-angiotensin system, develp the classic features of preeclampsia spontaneously during gestation, that is, they have an increase in blood pressure and develop proteinuria as well as placental alteration and intra-uterine growth restriction.
