What is it about?

A new blood test of inflammation (cxcl16) predicts an increased risk of 23% for either death, heart attack or stroke after a heart attack. This is mostly due to a 50% increase in risk of death.

Why is it important?

The risk prediction we found is independent of standard blood tests used for risk prediction and could potentially be used for individualizing treatment for especially high risk patients

Perspectives

Increased risk prediction can potentially increase benefit of treatment by providing more extensive treatment to high risk patients. At the same time it can be used to safely give less extensive treatment to low risk patients, saving them from potential harm from side effects. Our new blood test could potentially add to standard tests for risk prediction and hence add to this benefit.
