What is it about?
Most people who have a stroke do not realize it. Cognitive dysfunction is a common side effect of having a stroke, so we used a computer algorithm to look at how older Americans were performing cognitively in a longitudinal study. The computer identified a large number of people who appeared to have a stroke, but who did not know it. The computer was also able to identify people who had a stroke years before their diagnosis was recorded.

Why is it important?
Asymptomatic strokes, and strokes with only a few symptoms, are very common but not well understood. This study is the first to rely on cognitive performance as a way to monitor the presence of stroke.
