What is it about?

Conventional GFR estimating methods are not validated for use when the kidney function is changing rapidly as in acute kidney injury(AKI). The KeGFR equation takes into account the rate of change of creatinine and the volume of distribution changes to estimate the GFR. Using KeGFR we were able to detect and classify AKI effectively.

Why is it important?

Detecting AKI in time and estimating GFR in AKI is important for clinical management of patients including appropriate drug dosing to prevent drug toxicity and ensure drug effectiveness. A method to accurately assess GFR in AKI would be a useful tool to deliver safe and effective care to patients.

Perspectives

It was thrilling to apply this equation and see how GFR estimates vary significantly when creatinine values change in the same patient and between patients. We look forward to applying this concept in prospective studies to improve management of patients with AKI
