What is it about?
Delirium is the major acute driver of Alzheimer's disease and dementia the biggest risk factor for delirium. This study identifies an important biochemical link between the two major diseases affecting older people.

Why is it important?
This is the first study to identify this mechanism. The Apolipoprotein E4 is the most important genetic risk factor for late onset Alzheimer's disease. This mechanism may provide a therapeutic target to slow the progression of dementia.
Perspectives
The idea for this study was based on proteomics data from cerebrospinal fluid in delirium and dementia, from two international centres. This shows that we can build our understanding of delirium, uncovering mechanisms previously unthought of, by researching what happens during delirium.
