What is it about?

Fine needle aspiration is a low-cost, minimally invasive method which can be also used for breast tumors. Since lobular subtype is less common than ductal, there are few studies describing its cytological findings. In our study we compair classical and other variants of lobular breast cancer in relation to cellularity, cellular cohesion, presence of inflammation, nucleoli and nuclear atypia.

Why is it important?

Our findings showed the diagnoses of lobular breast cancer in Fine Needle Aspiration products is feasible even when atypia is mild. False negative diagnoses can be minimized through the experience of the cytopathologist and better knowledge of the cytological criteria, which was the objective of this study. Aside from that, the association between cell cohesion and the classical type of lobular breast carcinoma may be one of the factors that complicate this diagnosis on cytological basis.

After the publication of the Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Cytopathology we hope the fine needle aspiration of breast lesion become more popular. In this context, we hope our findings can acomplish information in order to make the diagnoses of lobular breast carcinoma in cytological specimens.
