What is it about?

A patient with macular edema from branch retinal vein occlusion with prior history of lensectomy and vitrectomy was treated with a variety of agents. Both lucentis and avastin were largely ineffective. Aflibercept (Eylea) provided control of macular edema for at least one month after injection.

Why is it important?

First report comparing efficacy of avastin, lucentis and eylea in a vitrectomized eye. It showed that eylea was superior to avastin and lucentis in the management of macular edema.

Perspectives

Very happy to evaluate all three anti-VEGF injections in a vitrectomized eye with branch retinal vein occlusion and macular edema. Eylea should be preferred over avastin or lucentis in such eyes.
