What is it about?

In this paper, we found a marginal association of TNF-α-308 G/A with diabetic retinopathy (DR) risk in the overall analysis, and an enhanced association among the European population. Besides, for the TNF-α-238 G/A polymorphism, there was mild correlation in the entire group, which was strengthened among the Asian population. As a result, we proposed that -308 A and -238 A allele in TNF-α gene potentially increased DR risk and showed a discrepancy in different ethnicities.

Why is it important?

Increasing evidence has indicated the promotion of TNF-α in the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR), and TNF-α gene variants may influence DR risk. However, the results remains conflicting. To comprehensively address this issue, we adopted the variants of TNF-α-308 G/A and -238 G/A, which had been studied most broadly, and performed the meta-analysis to evaluate the association of them with DR.

Perspectives

I hope results of the study can do a little bit to promote the progress of medical knowledge, which will make me feel very honored.
