What is it about?

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are colloidal drug delivery systems able to transport lipophilic or hydrophilic molecules and can be obtained using different preparation approaches. They are an alternative drug delivery system to other colloidal carriers, e.g., emulsions, liposomes, and polymeric nanoparticles, and very useful for the encapsulation, in particular, of drugs with poor water solubility such as progesterone

Why is it important?

The SLNs can represent a viable alternative to the intravaginal administration of progesterone in women undergoing treatment of luteinic insufficiency, when there are threats of abortion or in the case of assisted reproduction treatments.

Perspectives

This article could give useful indications for the treatment of vaginal pathologies in women.
