What is it about?

Fluid accumulation in the abdomen (i.e. ascites) is a common health problem. Its causes are diverse and differ from one location to another. Its causes and the consequences have not been studied at Gondar before. This study has addressed this common health issue and found out the following. Nearly half (46.2%) of the ascites were due to liver diseases. The other major causes were heart diseases (20%), tuberculosis (11%), and schistosomiasis(11%). Viral hepatitis (HBV, HCV) was the main cause of liver diseases.

Why is it important?

This study was the first in Ethiopia to address the epidemiology of ascites in particular. This is important because both focused diagnosis and treatment of ascites rely on knowing the common causes in the setting

Perspectives

I feel great pleasure in sharing my work with the research community. This study was just an eye opener towards the common health issue, ascites. I hope I will conduct more robust and more fruitful studies on this and other related topics in collaboration with other interested and experienced researchers.
