What is it about?
It is about a study to know the awareness and attitudes of the public regarding genetic risk of cancer. The survey study was conducted among the undergraduates of a public university. We found that lifestyle and environmental factors is perceived as a cause of cancer. Those who understood science better believed that genetic or biological factors may also be responsible. This is more so among women, and those from middle socioeconomic status.

Why is it important?
This allows health communication experts to know how to inform cancer risk to the various segments of society.
Perspectives
Scientific understanding of biological factors behind cancer has always been there, but the general public only knows about environmental causes. It is important for scientists to be able to communicate genetic risk of cancer to public. This task cannot be achieved by scientists alone, and require the close cooperation with experts in health communication. Published research/study such as the one publicized herein is among the first steps/strategies in bridging the gap between advances in molecular science and public knowledge in the area of cancer genetics.
