What is it about?

Face-to-face communication is very rich. We can share a lot of information quickly using our voice, face, and gestures, while monitoring the others responses with our ears and eyes. Other forms of communication are the opposite: lean. For example, texting and emailing provide little information to the person with whom we're communicating. This study examines how age, gender, and personality traits predict a person's preference for rich media over lean media.

Why is it important?

This study helps people choose media that are appropriate for the demographic and personality traits of the person with whom they are communicating.

Perspectives

This is an interesting study to get you to think about how you should communicate with others. Anything we can do to better communicate is a good thing!
