What is it about?

We have demonstrated that 30-min aerobic exercise can immediately improve brain processing by increasing both speed and accuracy of decision-making tasks, especially conflict-resolution ability by 15%.

Why is it important?

The findings in this study showed the specific improvements in cognitive functions by an acute bout of aerobic exercise activity. The results showed not only increases the cardiovascular function but also executive functions in decision-making. That is, we have identified an increase in cardiovascular function induced by physical exercise can increase the speed of processing decisions and resolving conflicts as well as the accuracy of such a decision. This shows the immediate effects of physical exercise on the ability to make better and faster decisions by as much as 15%.

Perspectives

The findings of this study provided evidence to demonstrate specifically what cognitive functions are improved by physical exercise. Even though there are many studies that had shown improvements in academic performance, it is important to identify specifically what cognitive functions are improved and what improvements they are. The results of this study showed that physical exercise can improve the executive function in conflict resolution by processing 20% faster and improving the accuracy by 15%. It also improves the processing speed by 10% for the non-conflict resolution task.
