What is it about?

This paper presents the results of testing the properties of different types of fly ash in order to determine their influence on properties and performance of asphalt mixtures. Also, the results of the volumetric composition tests are shown, as well as the results for water resistance and resistance to permanent deformation of 12 experimental asphalt mixtures in which the mineral filler was replaced with three types of fly ash of different origin in four different percentages (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%).

Why is it important?

In order to preserve natural resources, this study have been carried out to prove the usability of fly ash as alternative material in asphalt layers as a part of pavements construction. On the other hand, this study represents a part of effort to reduce fly ash land filling as a significant environmental problem. The findings of this study confirm that it is possible to achieve satisfactory properties and performance of asphalt mixtures with full or partial replacement of mineral filler with fly ash.

Road engineering allows inbuilding a large amounts of waste materials. Fly ash is extremely suitable for use in the all road layers. Because of that I truly believe that this article and the others similar, will wake attention for further research on investigation of properties of pavement and road construction made with different waste materials for the purpose of reducing the lend filling as well as for the improvement of the physical and mechanical properties of the road construction.
