What is it about?
Smart meters collect a large amount of data on electrical data usage. This can then be used to observe the habits of people in their households. The data can be analyzed to tell when people are home, which electrical devices they own, what time they take a hot shower, watch TV, sleep and many other personal habits. Such information can be maliciously used for surveillance, spying, social control, and planning burglaries. To keep this data hidden, this paper describes the use of an encryption method called Spritz that performs well in smart meters.

Why is it important?
As our world becomes more interconnected, more data is collected about our personal lives. Without protecting this data, we become vulnerable to whoever want to exploit us. Smart meters offer many benefits in terms of efficient power distribution, but the data they collect must be well guarded.
Perspectives
It is my hope that this paper will increase awareness about the need to protect our data, especially as automation rises. As more people take up an interest in cryptography and security, I believe the world will be a safer and thus better place. The needs are great and the threats are numerous, but with small increments, cyber threats can be reduced greatly.
