What is it about?
This work evaluated and compared the use of conditioned medium of bone marrow derived Mesenchymal stromal cells, endovenously infected MSCs and gabapentin (reference drug) for therapeutic treatment of neuropathic pain caused by Sciatic nerve lesion in a mouse model. The conditioned medium of BMdMSCs presented, similarly to injection of live BMdMSCs, a powerful and long-lasting anti-nociceptive effect on neuropathic pain, which is related with its modulatory properties on peripheral and central cytokines involved with the maintenance of this inflammatory syndrome.

Why is it important?
Neuropathic pain is a very complex syndrome and afflicts a large number of people all over the world. The use of analgesics is the major treatment and not always solves it. The use of Bone Marrow derived Mesenchymal stromal cells have been shown to modulate it. In our study we present fundamental support for the use of conditioned medium instead of drugs or MSCs, presenting biological mechanistic data on their secretome, controlling inflammatory cytokines, leading to pain relief.
