What is it about?

Two different kinds of rare earth-activated glass-based nanocomposite photonic materials are presented, which allow to tailor the photoluminescence properties of erbium rare-earth ions. The two structures under study were: (i) a glass ceramic SiO2-HfO2 waveguide, doped with erbium; and (ii) core-shell-like structures made of silica spheres doped with erbium, which are obtained by a seed growth method.

Why is it important?

The use of silica-hafnia nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous matrix or of nanometric spheres, having silica core and erbium-doped silica clad, permits to tailor the photoluminescence properties of erbium ions. These material structures may be important for the development of active photonic devices.
