What is it about?

This paper describes that some ionic liquids could control biofilms leading to contaminants on materials. Biofilms are formed by bacteria generally. Our research could evaluate biofilms formation by a special and unique laboratory biofilm reactor. Then using our evaluation techniques, we could confirm that some ionic liquids could be used as chemical cleaner.

Why is it important?

To control biofilms leading to scales, corrosion etc in pipe works, there are many countermeasures. But the chemical cleaners contained in liquids are the best for pipe works, because biofilms etc. could be removed during operations. From the viewpoint, the hypochlorous acid seems to be the supreme one at this point, But we can expect ionic liquids will exceed the acid cleaner and open the door to the new possibilities and frontier.

Perspectives

My colleagues and I just checked some kinds of ionic liquids in this paper. But other ionic liquids can be checked in the future. The systematic investigations will open the possibility for ionic liquids in the future!
