What is it about?

The single biggest improvement that can be made to a lithium-ion battery is to make a lithium metal anode rather than a hosted anode. However, batteries with lithium metal anodes fail by forming dendrites. This work describes a standard testing method that can be used to evaluate the resistance to forming dendrites. This method can be used to improve solid-state electrolytes.

Why is it important?

Lithium ion batteries are ubiquitous now in mobile devices. An improved battery with better safety, higher energy density, and shorter charge time would improve devices from electric vehicles and drones to smartphones and robots.

Perspectives

We worked for years on a platform to improve performance, and each year we have made tremendous strides by using this quick-turnaround, high signal-to-noise platform
