Why is it important?

Alternate hosts can be essential for some rust diseases, but less important for other rust diseases on cereal crops. Even for the same rust fungus, alternate hosts can be important in some regions, but not in other regions. With the recent discovery of alternate hosts for the stripe rust pathogen, this article is a timely review of the various roles and different levels of importance of alternate hosts for the rust diseases on small grain crops.

Perspectives

This article can help understand the complex life cycles of rust fungi. It can serve as a major reference for studying the biology of rust fungi and the epidemiology and management of rust diseases.
