What is it about?

This is a review article on the use of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and noble metal nanoparticle plasmonics. We provide an overview of the field and derive an expression for the EELS rate.

Why is it important?

This review should be read in conjunction with others as it provides a more focused look at the basic principles needed of plasmonics and EELS.

Perspectives

We wrote this to fill a void in the literature. While many reviews provide a detailed survey of the field, none to our knowledge provide a worked out example of how to treat the problem of plasmon-electron interaction. This review is meant to provide a theorist new to the field with a starting point by showing in detail how to model the interaction between a noble metal spherical nanoparticle and an electron excitation source.
