Why is it important?

Pyrogenic carbon is resistant to degradation and so represents a long term carbon sink. Understanding the cycling of pyrogenic carbon will assist in understanding its role in the global carbon cycle, and as biochar, its potential as a carbon sink to mitigate climate change
