What is it about?

Generative AI tools can drastically increase productivity, but do they quietly erode our critical skills? This paper introduces the concept of "competence debt": the growing gap between the work an organization produces and what its employees actually understand. We examine how unguided AI usage leads to human skill loss over time and provide a framework that helps you understand these factors and adapt your usage to avoid incurring competence debt. By mapping out these risks, we show how companies can harness the power of AI without sacrificing the human expertise needed to keep them in the driver's seat.

Why is it important?

As AI adoption rapidly accelerates in the workplace, the focus has largely been on immediate efficiency, masking the long-term costs of skill erosion. What makes our work unique is that we map the specific behavioral cycles such as the "unlearning loop" and the delayed discovery of poor quality that drive this competence debt.

Perspectives

Writing this article helped me put together a concrete framework of how unguided GenAI usage leads to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. It helped me put in words the consequences I was already observing and helped me to shield myself against these.
