What is it about?
As autonomous UAV face increasing risks from cyber-attacks and software aging, countermeasures are mandatory. By formalizing the stochastic competition between adversarial progression, represented by a Cyber Kill Chain attack process, and rejuvenation-based defense, we quantitatively evaluate the trade-offs between safety, availability, and security.

Why is it important?
The increased reliance on software and networked connectivity exposes UAV to a myriad of cyber-physical threats, where malicious intrusions, such as MAVLink injection attacks, can compromise flight safety and mission integrity. In our study, we introduce a cyber-defense system by explicitly embedding the CKC progression into the UAV’s stochastic operational model.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. I hope this article will be useful for the scientific community to underline the importance of cyber-physical systems resilience as a dynamic equilibrium, and to further investigate critical trade-offs between security, safety, and availability in cyber-physical UAV and UGV systems operating under cyber-threats.
