What is it about?

This paper introduces a wearable companion robot shaped like a neck pillow. The robot listens to the user, responds through spoken dialogue, and presents warm, neutral, or cool temperature feedback to the back of the neck in sync with what it says. We developed this system to explore whether combining conversation and thermal feedback can make a robot feel more reassuring, emotionally supportive, and life-like, and whether this kind of multimodal interaction could help reduce feelings of loneliness in everyday life.

Why is it important?

Loneliness is a growing social and public health issue, but many existing technologies focus on either conversation alone or physical cues alone. Our work is unique because it brings these two channels together in one wearable robot. The neck-pillow form is familiar and comfortable, and the back of the neck is especially sensitive to temperature, which makes thermal feedback a promising way to strengthen emotional communication. This research also suggests a practical path toward low-cost companion technologies for daily life, with possible future applications in mental health support and elder care.

Perspectives

What I find most exciting about this project is the idea that emotional support from a robot may come not only from words, but also from physical sensation. By combining speech with warmth and coolness in a familiar wearable form, we wanted to explore a more intimate and human-centered style of interaction. I hope this work encourages people to think about companion robots not just as devices that talk, but as presences that can feel comforting, expressive, and emotionally close in everyday life.
