What is it about?
This publication presents Furiose Interazioni, an innovative project that uses digital technology to re-interpret the classic Italian poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. The project creates a technological path where children - and adults - can explore the poem’s fantastical world through games, visuals, and storytelling. Developed by the National Technological Cluster for Cultural Heritage (TICHE), the project brings together experts in literature, education, design, and technology with the common goal to provide new access to literary and cultural heritage, especially for young learners. The project is structured on three levels: a theoretical level that maintains a connection with the original poem; an interaction level that focuses on user engagement; and a technological level that identifies suitable tools and their potential. These are combined into a unified interface that integrates textual, visual, and interactive components. The project is also linked to the restoration of the Mauriziano historical complex, where technology helps visitors discover new meanings in the villa’s frescoes. Together, the digital and physical experiences create a bridge between past and present, inviting people of all ages to rediscover a masterpiece of Italian literature in a new and immersive way.

Why is it important?
The publication highlights how the Furiose Interazioni project uses digital technologies to reinterpret Orlando Furioso without changing its meaning. It reuses the poem’s literary mechanisms - such as imagination, identification, and wonder - and combines them with the reuse of historical and iconographic content. The project is designed for people of all ages, from children to the elderly, and developed through a multidisciplinary collaboration between literature, pedagogy, design, and technology. It explores how interactivity and immersive media can support learning and enhance artistic experience.
Perspectives
From our perspective, the Furiose Interazioni project represents an experiment on how contemporary technologies can be used to enhance literary heritage while remaining faithful to its original meaning. It shows that digital media can support the transmission of a work’s authentic message, while also enriching its tradition and key concepts. Through this approach, Orlando Furioso is not transformed but reinterpreted in a way that highlights its imaginative and cultural value within a contemporary context.
