What is it about?

With the advent of AI image generators, such as DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and the like, AI-generated artifacts are reshaping the landscape of digital arts in recent years. While these tools offer exciting possibilities for creativity, they also raise important questions about ethics, ownership, and the future of human-made art. This study reviews academic publications to understand both the challenges and opportunities AI-generated art brings to digital arts and its ecosystem.

Why is it important?

Our findings show four major areas of negative disruptions: ethical concerns, legal issues, socio-cultural risks, and technological challenges. At the same time, the research highlights three major positive trends. There is a growing collaboration between artists and AIs. These tools are primarily used as a creative tool before as a creative partner, helping artists brainstorm ideas, overcome creative blocks, and explore new styles. They are also prompting changes in education, policy, and industry by encouraging collaboration across disciplines and sparking conversations about how to responsibly integrate AI into creative practices. Ultimately, this work aims to support a balanced digital art world, in which humans and AIs can co-exist, co-create, and collaborate. It calls for better AI literacy, clearer legal frameworks, and inclusive design to ensure that both human and machine creativity can thrive together. This research is especially relevant for artists, educators, developers, and policymakers navigating the evolving intersection of art and technology.
