What is it about?

Nowadays, museums search for ways to enhance the visitors' engagement. One of the tools they use is digital technology. However, there is no clear guidance on how to design digital exhibitions for museums. In this work, we explore the social VR exhibition design process, engaging both museum curators and technical experts throughout the whole process. The study results in insight into how the exhibitions of the future could look like and guidelines on how to design them.

Why is it important?

The cooperation between the curators and the technical team throughout the whole design process leads to a better final experience. In this scenario, the technical team is able to provide the curators with the newest insights into what the possibilities of the technology are (which the curators might not know), leading to a more interesting experience, and the constant engagement of curators ensures the technical team does not work on elements that are not interesting from a curatorial point of view. This constant cooperation reduces the amount of unnecessary work and ensures that the technology is used knowingly.

Perspectives

The cooperation with museum curators over a long period of time (7 months) was very interesting to me. It revealed how much different perspectives bring to the table, and showed the strong benefits of multidisciplinary teams.
