What is it about?
Radon gas is a hidden health risk and the second leading cause of lung cancer worldwide. This work introduces a new, compact sensor that uses a photodiode to detect radon without bulky equipment. The device is IoT-enabled, low-cost, and energy efficient, making it suitable for continuous indoor monitoring in homes, schools, and workplaces.

Why is it important?
Radon exposure is a major but often overlooked health risk, responsible for thousands of cases of lung cancer each year. Our IoT-enabled photodiode sensor offers a cost-effective, accurate, and low-power solution, helping to protect people’s health by enabling continuous indoor monitoring in homes, schools, and workplaces.
Perspectives
This new sensing approach can be extended beyond radon to detect other hazardous airborne particles and gases. Its IoT connectivity enables integration into smart buildings and large-scale environmental monitoring networks. In the future, such systems could support public health policies, guide safer construction practices, and contribute to healthier indoor environments worldwide.
