What is it about?
Preserving our environment and minimizing the damage caused by the unsustainable development that has long characterized human activity is imperative. Protecting our planet in all its diversity is a shared responsibility. Computing and its technologies can — and should — play a significant role in achieving this goal. This article presents the principles and actions developed by the Brazilian Computing Society’s Global Climate Change Task Force, emphasizing the critical role of computing in addressing sustainability challenges.

Why is it important?
The world is facing an escalating climate crisis, marked by rising temperatures, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressure on natural resources. At the same time, computing technologies are increasingly embedded in every aspect of modern life, from transportation and healthcare to agriculture and energy systems. This creates both a responsibility and an opportunity: computing can either contribute to environmental degradation (e.g., through high energy consumption and e-waste) or be harnessed as a powerful tool for sustainability.
Perspectives
We hope this publication will inspire policymakers, professionals, and the scientific community to fully integrate sustainability into every aspect of the digital transformation.
