This review provides the first comprehensive taxonomy of player engagement estimation methods across multiple domains, synthesizing fragmented research into a unified framework. Unlike previous work, we analyze engagement as a dynamic process spanning cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions, rather than treating it as a static state. Our analysis reveals critical insights about multimodal approaches to engagement measurement and exposes the trade-offs between industry practices and academic methods. By highlighting the complementary nature of different measurement techniques, our work bridges the gap between research and practical implementation, offering game developers actionable strategies to improve player experience and retention in today's competitive gaming market.
Perspectives
This review transformed my perspective on video games, revealing them as complex experiential systems rather than mere entertainment. While synthesizing the literature, I was struck by how engagement manifests across cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions—much like other deeply human experiences. What fascinated me most was discovering the intricate relationship between measurable signals (like facial expressions or heart rates) and the ineffable subjective experience of being truly engaged. The challenge of quantifying something so personal yet universal mirrors broader questions in human-computer interaction. This research has applications far beyond gaming—from education to healthcare to workplace productivity. Understanding how to measure engagement could help us design more effective learning environments, therapeutic tools, and digital experiences of all kinds. I hope readers come away appreciating both the technical complexity of engagement measurement and the profound human experience it represents. After all, engagement is ultimately about connection—between players and games, between humans and technology, and between objective measurement and subjective experience.
