What is it about?
Suicide is a growing global health issue, and learning more about how suicidal thoughts develop is crucial for prevention. Traditional research often relies on clinical studies and surveys, which may not fully capture the complexity of suicidal ideation. This study analyzes real conversations from the social media platform Reddit to explore the complicated emotions and themes linked to suicidal thoughts. Using advanced language analysis techniques, the research involved measuring emotional expressions using sentiment analysis and exploring key discussion themes using topic modeling, identifying important struggles users' had. By analyzing large-scale social media data using computational methods, this study provides valuable insights into the emotional and thematic patterns of suicidal thoughts, helping to inform more effective mental health intervention methods.

Why is it important?
Understanding why and how people express suicidal thoughts is essential for improving prevention efforts. The use of structured surveys or clinical interviews may miss the raw, unfiltered emotions that people deal with. Social media platforms like Reddit provide spaces for individuals to openly discuss their struggles, offering valuable insights into the personal and social factors linked to suicidal ideation. By analyzing these conversations, this research helps to understand these struggles, identifying important risk factors to inform more targeted mental health support systems and awareness strategies.
