What is it about?
In this work, we examined the environmental impact of using Large Language Models (LLMs) in the software development lifecycle. Our findings show that LLM-assisted code development can result in 19 to 43 times higher carbon emissions compared to manual coding. Notably, this gap widens as the complexity of the task increases.
