What is it about?

In this paper we explore the use of a prototype technology using voiced conversational AI (CAI) to engage young children’s interest in nature, through the role-play of the ‘Talking Tree’, a fictitious character of a friendly tree that aims to engage children in noticing or thinking about nature. Through three key themes, we examine the demonstration and co-construction of knowledge in technology interactions, communication breakdowns and remedies, and how animism, associations, and characterisation link fantasy to reality. We contribute insight into the use of conversational AI for learning in the busy environments of early childhood education centres and the use of CAI-performed fictional characters to build children’s connection with nature.

Why is it important?

Continued research into the use of CAI in early childhood settings is essential. This paper reiterates other calls for greater transparency around the development of CAI models, including child friendly language to aid the ethical conduct of research and production of child-AI systems.
