What is it about?

Blind and low-vision software professionals face many accessibility challenges that can hinder their workplace contributions and careers. Building tools can help address some of these challenges. This qualitative, interview-based study of 30 blind and low-vision software professionals explores the purposes and motivations for building DIY tools and the impacts such tools have on workplace accessibility.

There is still much work to be done to create a workplace environment for software professionals that is accessible to all. This study highlights the reasons why blind and low vision software professionals feel the necessity to build their own tools and the challenges these tools address. Organizations can use this information to help improve their workplaces. Additionally, the study highlights the need for more effective community-oriented platforms for blind and low vision software professionals to share tools, tips, and tricks.
