What is it about?
This study looks at how software engineering researchers feel about using AI tools like ChatGPT in their work. It was carried out at a large, independent research institute in Europe. The researchers wanted to see how AI is starting to fit into everyday research tasks, while keeping the work fair, honest, and high quality. They found that most researchers are fine with using AI for small, clear tasks that can be easily checked, and as an extra helper alongside normal methods. But researchers think it is wrong to use AI to judge someone else’s work. Researchers also disagreed about using AI for important or sensitive tasks, that typically need real human effort and emotional care.

Why is it important?
AI tools are becoming more common in research, but there is no clear agreement on when and how they should be used. This study gives us a better understanding of the current norms and attitudes regarding where AI can help without causing problems, and where it could be risky. The results can help create rules and good practices so researchers can use AI in a safe and responsible way. This helps protect the quality and trustworthiness of science, while still letting people benefit from what AI can do.
