What is it about?

This study examines how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Austria use AI and prepare for upcoming European AI regulations. Through interviews with eight SME leaders, the research reveals that most SMEs prefer using third-party AI tools for convenience and efficiency. While there's some awareness of the AI Act, only those directly involved in AI development are actively preparing. Voluntary codes of conduct are seen as beneficial for building trust but are challenging to implement without external support. The findings highlight the need for easy AI integration, ongoing regulatory support, and proactive ethical practices.
