What is it about?

"Holonomy" allows users to navigate a space, unlike any space they have ever moved in. Based on a different set of mathematical laws, it allows users to travel for infinite distances in virtual reality while only moving within a small physical area, e.g., in their living room.

Why is it important?

Navigation research builds on prior experience. When investigating how someone navigates, you can show them, e.g., a map of a new city, but they have navigated cities before. If you introduce new landmarks, they have navigated via landmarks before. "Holonomy" introduces a whole new space to navigate. This allows researchers to observe how basic navigational skills are developed. Also, mathematics tends to be rather abstract. That holds especially true for mathematical spaces that defy our intuition because they do not align with our day-to-day experiences. The virtual reality experience of "Holonomy" allows users to experience what it is like to live in such a distorted mathematical space, thereby learning its properties.
