What is it about?

Carnegie Mellon University's CS Academy offers free Python curriculum for K-12 teachers available in both English and Spanish. The translation includes all resources and supporting materials. Students can toggle between languages easily, finding additional support when they are overloaded cognitively.

Why is it important?

Understanding cognitive load helps both teachers and students identify moments when they may benefit from language support. Using the translation, as needed, helps students lessen the cognitive load and enables them to continue learning rather than fall behind.

Perspectives

This is incredibly important work that addresses the why we need language support rather than the usual how and what. By understanding cognitive load and why multilingual learners need additional language support, we can address their needs proactively, even teaching them to look for signs of extraneous cognitive load moments when their brains can no longer process.
