What is it about?

Our research focuses on redesigning EarSketch, an educational tool that teaches coding through music creation, to be more accessible for students who are blind or visually impaired (BVI). By involving teachers, students, and community members in the design process, we aim to create a platform that better meets their needs. This approach will help make computer science education more inclusive and engaging for BVI learners, allowing them to explore coding in a fun and effective way.

Why is it important?

Our work is unique and timely because it redesigns EarSketch, a platform combining music and coding, to be accessible for blind and visually impaired (BVI) learners. By involving teachers, students, and the community in the design process, we address the specific needs of BVI students. This approach not only makes STEAM education more inclusive but also sets a precedent for other educational tools. Our work can significantly broaden opportunities for BVI learners in technology and coding.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a rewarding experience as it brought together my passion for music and coding with the goal of making education more inclusive. I hope this work highlights the potential for creative, accessible learning environments and sparks further innovations in inclusive education. More than anything, I hope it opens doors for BVI learners to explore and succeed in computer science education.
