What is it about?
The Workshop on Software Engineering Education for the Next Generation was part of the International Conference on Software Engineering 2023. It specifically supported the general theme of “Educating the Next Generation of Software Engineers”. Building on its predecessors, the workshop used a highly interactive format, structured around eight short paper presentations to generate discussion topics, an activity to select the most interesting topics, and structured breakout sessions. This enabled the participants to discuss the most interesting topics in detail. Participants presented the results of the breakout sessions using mind maps.

Why is it important?
Software Engineering Education for the Next Generation is crucial for several reasons: it prepares students to meet the increasing demand in rapidly evolving technological landscapes, bridges the current skills gap, and equips them to solve complex real-world problems. Additionally, it inculcates ethical considerations and societal impact awareness, fosters adaptability to new technologies, and emphasizes the importance of soft skills like communication and collaboration. This multifaceted education is not only vital for economic growth and international competitiveness but also has a recursive benefit on educational systems through the development and improvement of educational technologies.
Perspectives
Software Engineering Education for the Next Generation is pivotal for harnessing the full potential of AI and educational technologies. These emerging fields require a nuanced understanding that goes beyond traditional software engineering. By incorporating AI and educational technology into the curriculum, educators can produce graduates who are not only technically proficient but also capable of ethical reasoning and human-centered design. This prepares them to develop AI systems that are socially responsible and educational technologies that are pedagogically effective, thereby enriching both the industry and society at large.
