What is it about?

In this late-breaking work, we present four scenarios of an apartment tour in Virtual Reality. Each scenario allows users to navigate using natural walking as a means of locomotion to explore the apartment. We demonstrate different room connection techniques to facilitate this natural walking experience within a small physical space. The tool presented aims to adapts or generates virtual environments to fit confined areas using advanced spatial strategies like non-Euclidean geometries and procedural content generation. By enabling seamless transitions and realistic navigation, we aim to enhance the immersive experience for users.

Why is it important?

Achieving natural walking in virtual reality, especially in small spaces, is not trivial. Our work proposes a tool that uses sophisticated algorithms to generate virtual layouts, allowing users to explore these environments using natural walking. This approach significantly improves immersion and user satisfaction compared to traditional methods relying on handheld controllers. To validate our solution, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers. Their feedback provided valuable insights into the practical value and potential impact of our proposal on the virtual reality field as a whole. By addressing a critical challenge in VR navigation, our tool opens up new possibilities for applications in real estate, education, tourism, and training simulations, making VR more engaging and accessible.

Perspectives

By proposing this tool and validating it through scenarios and interviews, we hope that our article can serve as a foundation or guideline for future developments in the virtual reality area. Our goal is to encourage the implementation of natural walking techniques in VR, enhancing the overall user experience. This innovative approach to VR navigation has broad implications for the future of immersive technologies. By focusing on user experience and practical application, we offer valuable insights for developers, designers, and researchers in the VR field. Moving forward, further refinement and user feedback will be crucial in expanding the tool's capabilities and ensuring its effectiveness in diverse contexts. We look forward to seeing how our work can inspire further advancements, making virtual reality more immersive and user-friendly for everyone.
